The wine we were told to throw away

When we took over the bodega in 2021, there was a 2019 Mencía still in the cellar. The previous owner said it was turning to vinegar and told us to pour it away.

We didn't. A local oenologist and a sommelier worked on it for about a year and brought it back. In December 2022 it went into chestnut barrels, because Soutelo means chestnut grove. Today it tastes of dark fruit, roasted chestnut and a little cocoa, and the finish stays with you.

There are 402 bottles, and there will never be more.

The view tells you a lot.

The river below. Stone underfoot. Vines on the slope. This is Ribeira Sacra, and this is where we make the wine.

Harvest notes

This April a frost took most of our grapes. One parcel came through, and we still don't know why. Our first letter is about that. After it, a few emails a year: new vintages, and what the weather did to them.
